I've been coming to Leeds for years and I know it well enough to get around without thinking. It isn't mine though. I've never had to live with its bus timetable or queue in its shops, so on a Saturday I get to walk round it as a guest, and a guest can get away with looking a bit harder than he should.
That's what these are. A Saturday spent between the shopping centre and Kirkgate Market, nosing at people doing their weekend. I didn't go looking for anything in particular. I followed whatever I found myself staring at, which in the market was most things.
If this were my own town I'd walk past all of it the way I walk past shops every day without seeing them. Knowing a place fairly well gets you through it without a map. Not belonging to it stops you seeing straight through it though. The people in these photographs were just getting on with an ordinary Saturday and I've tried to leave it ordinary. I've just given it more attention than they probably had time to.
