About
I make small projects about ordinary places. The walk from the car to the desk. Five shops on the lane where I live. A dual carriageway seen from the front seat. An office building on a Sunday, lit and heated and empty. None of it's remarkable and that's not an apology.
I travel too, though it changes nothing. The approach is the same in a town or city I've never been to as it is on my own street. Given an hour in a strange postcode I will still end up down the covered passage rather than in front of the monument or watching the one man in the crowd who came for the quiet.
What I want out of a photograph isn't a record of how somewhere looks. It's the answer to why I went, and why that corner rather than the famous one round the next street. Usually because nobody else was going to.
Photography is a reason to look and walking gives you the time. Everything I've made came out of that overlap, often at the edges of a working life, usually on the way somewhere else.
The technical part interests me least. I want to know why I stopped. Why that shopfront on that afternoon, why the drain and not the house, why I went back to a street I left when I was four and stood there for an hour photographing the only things on it that had not been replaced. I do not always have the answer before I shoot. That's the reason to shoot.
