In 2017 we released an album with the cover photo of a doorway. Michael Head sat on the step of a derelict building where Norfolk Street meets Simpson Street and the photo taken there became the sleeve of Adiós Señor Pussycat - our first album release that reached number one on the UK independent chart. The album sleeve photograph was shot by John Johnson in June 2016 just as we entered Steve Powell's studio to start a twelve month period to record it.
Ten years on I went back and photographed the step, this time with no one on it. The door still there and the same view back down the street. An ordinary corner that carried our extraordinary project and then went back to being a corner again.
It really doesn't feel like ten years. And yet everything sits in the gap between. The album made, released and long since let go, the work with Michael finished, the ever extending distance that opens between people who once built something together and then don't. Adiós means goodbye. It turns out you can go back to the place and still not get back the thing you went there for.
